Warriors stay firm at top of log

THE CHEVROLET Warriors wicketkeeper and captain Davy Jacobs lauded his teammates for their collective effort as they picked up their second consecutive Ram Slam T20 Challenge win in East London on Tuesday night.

The Warriors followed up their 26run win over defending champions bizhub Highveld Lions with a five wicket win over the Chevrolet Knights at Buffalo Park.

Jacobs said he was highly pleased with the performance of the team.

“We are happy with the points in the bag. It was a very good team effort with everyone adding their valuable contribution.

“John-John (Smuts) was outstanding with the ball and the bat while Ryan Bailey controlled the innings well with all his experience before he was controversially dismissed.

“Guys like Lundi (Mbane) offered more variation and he was tight when needed the most. We just have to keep the momentum going, play to lock up every game we play and stay at the top,” said Jacobs.

With the win Warriors moved to the top of the Ram Slam table standings on eight points from their first two games.

The Warriors now head to Port Elizabeth’s St Georges Park looking to make it three from three when they face the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras on Saturday evening.

On Tuesday night, the Warriors showed great team spirit with the top five batsmen all adding a valuable contribution to the chase.

John-John Smuts, who was also the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 2/18 in three overs, and top scored for the hosts with a run-a-ball 29.

Smuts caught and bowled both Obus Pienaar (7) and Diago Rosier (11) in similar fashion before folding the match with the bat.

The game almost turned on it’s head when Bailey was sent back to the dugout judged leg before wicket with the Warriors looking for 16 runs from 16 balls.

Bailey fell for 22 (24) when the ball brushed the inside edge on its way through with the replay also showing it would have gone on to miss the stumps.

The Warriors will host the Cobras in PE before getting back on the road to face the Titans in Benoni.

Jacobs went on to highlight the importance of carrying their momentum into tomorrow’s clash.

“We’ve got a very tough game against the Cobras and we know we have to pitch up.

“They are one of the favourites to win the competition so we’ll be looking to take our momentum into the game and hopefully come out on top.

“We have the team to do so and we just have to play as a collective again and produce the results,” he added.
