Bulldogs bite the dust again

THE South Western Districts Eagles scored six tries to the Border Bulldogs’ four to secure a 40-26 victory at Buffalo City Stadium yesterday.

SWD right wing Alshaun Bock was the star of the show and ran in four tries in a devastating display of speed and pace.

“It’s a bit disappointing; we conceded tries at critical moments,” said Bulldogs head coach Andre Human.

Reserve utility back Michael Makase scored under the posts after receiving the ball out wide on the right to claim the Bulldogs first four-try bonus point of the season with a minute left in the game. This followed a strong finish by Border.

SWD scored in the second minute through flank Lyndon Hartnick.

The Bulldogs hit back in the sixth minute when fullback Siphosenkosi Nofemele dotted down the ball after it was kicked ahead. Scrumhalf Mario Noordman converted for a 7-5 lead.

Bock then scored his first in the 17th minute and the conversion by Karlo Aspeling put SWD in front at 12-7. Eighthman Alwyn Bester then scored in the 33rd minute and Aspeling’s conversion made it 19-7.

The Bulldogs’ Makazole Mapimpi scored in the right-hand corner in the 37th minute, with reserve scrumhalf Bangihlombe Kobese converting. Having clawed their way back to within five points with a minute of the first half remaining, a wayward Bulldogs pass on their 22m line saw SWD stealing the ball and Bock going over for his second try.

The conversion from Aspeling on the hooter gave SWD a 26-14 lead, which they extended two minutes into the second half. Bock received the ball on the Bulldogs’ 22m and scored his third, with Aspeling’s conversion making it 33-14.

Bock scored his fourth seven minutes later, and Aspeling’s fifth conversion put the score at 40-14. The Bulldogs scored on 54 minutes when Thembani Mkokeli crossed in the corner. Ko- bese missed the conversion.
