Border poised for fight

SPARKS are set to fly tomorrow afternoon when defending champions Border Women take on Western Province in their Interprovincial Rugby League clash at the Buffalo City Stadium.

The teams return from an off weekend, although most players in both sides were involved with both the Springbok Women’s training camp and the SA Women’s Sevens team.

“The team is looking good, we are getting back our sevens Springboks and we are almost at full strength,” said Border coach Skwiri Kholonza.

Border have already made themselves the team to beat at the top of the Interprovincial log after two matches with a full house of 10 points.

Eastern Province are hot on their heels with nine points in second place, while Western Province and the Bulls are third and fourth respectively, with six points each.

Border opened their campaign with a solid 37-8 victory over South Western District away from home.

The team then returned to East London and dealt out a powerful 43-3 dismantling of KwaZulu-Natal Women, to secure top spot and issue a warning. “The team has started well and the players are focused and ready to win this weekend,” said Kholonza.

Western Province bounced back emphatically from their surprising 15-12 loss to Eastern Province, by sweeping aside SWD 55-3.

Last year’s final was contested between these two sides and this should add some spice to the occasion, especially since Border comfortably won the match in style to take the title. “We want to pick up where we left off last year. We don’t want to win by a low score, we want a big win,” said Kholonza.

Captain and Springbok Nolusindiso Booi will lead the side and will be backed by fellow Boks involved in the past weekend’s training camp, including prop Asithandile Ntoyanto, flank Nwabisa Ngxatu, No8 Mandisa Williams and wing Siviwe Basweni, while hooker Thantaswa Macingwane will add valuable experience to the bench and will be looking to make an impact in the second half of the end of the match.

Border will also welcome back into the starting XV three of their sevens Springboks who missed their opening two games – Zintle Mphupa, Nosiphiwo Goda and Fundiswa Plaatjie, and they will be looking to make an immediate impact.

Western Province had seven involved in the Bok training squad and will hope to get as much out of them as possible.

The match kicks off at 3pm after two women’s club match curtain raisers.
