Queen’s end season on a high

QUEEN’S College pulled off a magnificent 35-33 victory over Dale College in a ding-dong battle at the Queen’s College Recreation grounds on Saturday.

The Queen’s College first half performance left a lot to be desired as they struggled with the set phases. The lineouts were in shambles and in the scrums, they were not able to dominate as they wished.

The Dale College back three, who traditionally have been a major attacking weapon in years gone by, failed to impress and were often guilty of allowing either the ball to bounce or fumbled many kicks.

Having said that, Dale played with urgency on attack in the first half and were clinical in the lineouts where number five Lwazi Poswayo, seemed to win the ball at ease.

After 10 minutes of play, Dale flyhalf Justerino Davids missed a relatively easy penalty attempt.

An error in the Queen’s lineout five metres from their own line saw Poswayo snatch the ball and dive over for a try, registering the first points of the match, but Davids missed the conversion.

In the 14th minute Queen’s were able to register their first points with a penalty from fullback Leroy Kuyler. Two minutes later Queen’s hooker Uhuru Vanda opted to hold onto the ball instead of making a pass when there was a clear overlap.

A lineout turnover by Dale saw them make their way down into the Queen’s half and force a penalty. Davids made no mistake and Dale led 8-3 halfway through the first half.

Dale then scored their second try of the match through right wing, Luzuko Mase, after some great work by the Dale forwards. The conversion again was unsuccessful.

Then Queen’s College right wing, Dancan Murgeuzi, was able to score after the Dale fullback knocked on a high ball.

The conversion from Kuyler missed the target. The Dale hooker then scored an unconverted try on the half-time whistle to leave the score at 18-8 at the break after a frenetic first half.

The second half commenced and Dale were awarded a penalty but Davids was not able to bag the three points. In the fifth minute Kuyler added three points to the Queen’s total via a well-judged penalty kick to cut the deficit to seven points.

Five minutes later Davids added a penalty for Dale to extend the lead to

21-11.

An error in the Dale lineout saw the ball spun wide and Queen’s left wing, Yaw Penxe, break the line and set up a try for open side flank Jaime Brookes. Kuyler converted, leaving Queen’s three points behind.

It was all Queen’s at this stage and they were able to add two very well worked long range tries from outside centre, Avela Jubase and Penxe. Penxe’s try was converted to take the score to 21-30 in favour of Queen’s.

Dale then bounced back with a try under the poles from left wing Luyolo Khuse. The easy conversion was kicked.

It was then Queen’s turn to score with a try to Uhuru Vanda in the right hand corner but the conversion was missed.

Dale were the last team to score through the hard working Poswayo. The conversion attempt hit the upright and stayed out to leave the score at 35-33 in favour of Queen’s who were ecstatic to have won the match. With the ebb and flow of the match, a draw may have been a fair result. However, Queen’s will be happy to have ended the season off with a win.
