United take big lead into league semi second leg

THE Border Hockey League semifinal first legs were battled out on Sunday afternoon at Kat Leisure Park.

In the men’s premier division United claimed a victory over Bohs to take into the second leg while Parkside and Old Selbornians fought out a fiercely competed draw.

The first men’s premier league semifinal clash between United A and Bohs was a tightly contested affair and it was United who managed to make their chances count as they claimed a 3-0 win over a battling Bohs side.

Bohs fought gamely throughout the match but couldn’t find the finishing touch at crucial moments while United picked up a deserved win.

Callum Hansen opened the scoring for Buffs in the 11th minute as a deflected strike snuck past Bohs keeper Nathan Waters.

Bohs came close to an equaliser from a penalty corner midway through the half but a good save from United keeper Keegan Nel kept them out.

United then had numerous opportunities to extend their lead but some stoic defence and good keeping from Waters kept the score at 1-0 going into the half time break.

Three minutes into the second half Hansen gave United some breathing room with his second of the match and Bevan Bennett then sealed the win with six minutes remaining when he converted their third of the match.

The second men’s semifinal between Parkside and Old Boys then followed and was arguably the match of the day.

A scintillating match ensued between the two sides and in the end neither could be separated after the match ended 3-all leaving everything to play for in the coming weekend’s second leg.

A lively start to the match from Old Boys was rewarded in the fourth minute when Wade Young converted a penalty corner to give his side the lead.

Jacques Doubell then added his name to the score sheet as Old Boys’ great start continued in the 12th minute.

After a slow start Parkside pulled one back through Lee Prinsloo in the 18th minute.

A yellow card to Parkside’s Geoffry Gamiet in the 26th minute saw him cooling his heels for six minutes after a bad tackle.

Despite further chances for both sides the half ended 2-1 in favour of Old Boys.

Parkside emerged from the half time break refreshed and in a fighting mood and soon evened the scores five minutes into the second half through Curtis Macquiena.

Dustin Jagels then put Parkside in the lead for the first time in the match in the 16th minute.

Parkside’s Hiram de Klerk picked up his team’s second yellow for kicking the ball away in the 19th minute and Old Boys capitalised by evening up the scores a minute later through Brad Pautz.

A second yellow card to de Klerk in the 26th minute meant he had to spend 10 minutes in the bin for raising his stick at an opponent, which would keep him out of the rest of the match.

The encounter finally ended amid a flurry of chances for both sides, 3-all in the end.
