Big push for testing Wildrun title

Women’s champ back to defend crown.

THE Wildcoast Wildrun heads off from Kei Mouth today as runners test themselves in the annual three-day trail running event that finishes at Hole-in-the-Wall.

The 112km idyllic run has fast become one of the most popular trail runs on the SA calendar since its inception in 2009 with entries often being sold out quickly.

Eastern Cape competitors taking part in this year’s race are Andrew Lake and Stuart Lustgarten from East London, Simon Wallis and Stuart Williams from Kenton and Ben Garrett and Olivia Read from PE. From next Thursday to Saturday the second event will kick-off and this is known as the Journey and is considered more of a social affair where runners just enjoy the fantastic route.

2011 Wildcoast Wildrun co-winner and local adventure race enthusiast Donovan Sims will be taking part in the Journey leg. The route, which is split into three days has no markers and runners have to navigate themselves, which is however a pretty simple task as long as sea is kept on the runners’ right this should be enough to guide them to the finish of each day.

Day one is off from Kei Mouth to Kob Inn, crossing the Nxaxo and Qhorha River Mouth and is a 44.2km trek with a 519m ascent. Day two sees the competitors set off from Kob Inn to The Haven, crossing the Shixini, Nqabarha and Mbashe River Mouth and totals 35.2km and a 555m ascent.

Day three is the final slog and heads from the Haven to Hole-in-the-Wall, crossing the Xhora and Mpako River Mouth and is a brisk 34km with a challenging 1046m ascent.

When runners complete their third Wildrun they receive a beautiful beaded Nguni cow, which is one of the icons of the Wild Coast and a frequent sight along the route. This year five runners will receive this accolade and another 10 have already got theirs.

Runners who have taken part in all five Wildcoast Wildrun's so far and who will also be partaking this year are Martin Stewart and Angelo Henry, both from Cape Town
