Border Women emerge victorious against WP

THE Border Women’s team emerged 22-7 winners against the visiting Western Province side in a national interprovincial semifinal clash at at the Buffalo City Stadium Friday evening.

The visitors showed some excellent defence throughout to keep the scoreline to a respectable level.

The match, from the opening whistle, was played deep within the visitors’ 22m area with Border trying to force their way to the try line.

Border managed to score four tries and throughout the game the WP defence was solid but they were lacking in attack.

However, the visitors’ defence finally cracked in the 20th minute when sensational Lusanda Dumke forced her way in to score the opening try of the game.

The conversion kick by Siviwe Basweni was unsuccessful.

A few minutes later, Dumke again found an opening and cut inside from centre but she was let down by lack of pace as WP brought her down a few metres from the try line.

But five minutes later Dumke managed to score her second try after benefiting from her side’s resilience against a strong and determined WP defence.

Basweni once again failed to convert.

About 10 minutes before the half-time break Nwabisa Gxatu also announced her presence via a try.

The second stanza started the same as the first with the WP defence again taking the spotlight, denying the hosts a try during the first 20 minutes after the break.

However, WP could only excel in their defending and were once again exposed when Amanda Tshidi also crossed the tryline halfway through the second half.

As the game neared the final whistle, Border showed signs of tiredness as WP began attacking, but Border managed to absorb the pressure until the visitors were rewarded with their only try which was successfully converted.

But it was too little too late for WP and Border booked a spot in the final due to take place this weekend against the Blue Bulls who beat Eastern Province 8-5 on Saturday.

Meanwhile the Currie Cup First Division match between the Border Bulldogs and the visiting Leopards ended in confusion when the referee called off the game after 18 minutes of the second half after the stadium’s floodlights refused to work.

At that point the Leopards were leading 34-19, having scored six tries to Border’s three.

Border’s poor handling of the ball and poor positioning cost them the game.

If you cannot master the basics, you are bound to suffer and the Bulldogs can bare testimony to this fact.

Earlier on, in the first curtain-raiser, the Border U19 side endured a 56-0 hiding from their Griquas counterparts.
