Comrades warriors to tackle the Legends run

All eyes will be on former Comrades Marathon champions Ludwick Mamabolo and Stephen Muzhingi at the second edition of the annual Legends Ultra-Marathon on Sunday.

The seasoned duo are some of the big names who will be battling it out on the road in the 68km race from Bhisho to East London.

In another fillip for the event, Legends has been declared a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon – the biggest marathon on this side of the equator.

Bara said he was disappointed by the low number of Eastern Cape athletes taking part in the Comrades.

He said: “It cannot be that only 1% of Comrades entrants this year were from this province – the lowest in comparison to the other eight provinces. That is just bad when we have such abundance of talent.”

While the total prize-money is R1-million, the victor of the ultra-marathon will walk away with a whopping R120000 plus R30000 if the winner is an Eastern Cape resident. In the half-marathon, the winner will pocket R15000 while a 5km fun run will also take place.
