Crunch time for Border masterclass

The Border cricket team gets down to business as they open their Sunfoil Cup Three-Day Competition account against Eastern Province at St Georges Park today.

Border will be looking for a top result against their closest rivals, and partners in the Warriors franchise, and get their season off to a good start.

Following the three-day matches conclusion on the Saturday the rivals will then open their T20 competition seasons on Sunday.

“Our goal has always been to win the three-day competition and our focus is on that competition, even though we want to compete for the other trophies, but we would love to win the three-day cup,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

“Playing EP is always a big game as it’s a local derby and I’m sure EP will be up for the match, but over the last two seasons we have had the upper hand over them and we would like to continue that dominance this season.”

Border has enjoyed a good pre-season and will be relishing the prospect of getting their season under way.

The team is injury-free, which is always a fantastic way to start the season. However, they will be losing one or two players to the Warriors.

A boost for Border will be the inclusion of Warriors star Aya Gqamane who exploded on the Sunfoil Series scene during the 2012-13 season.

Gqamane has recently returned from injury and will be looking to get back to his best and put in some top performances to get himself back into the Warriors mix.

Border will be banking on some top performances from 2013-14 player of the season Jerry Nqolo, who will be wanting to continue his fantastic form in the new season and put himself on the Warriors radar.

Stalwarts Burton de Wett and inspirational captain Abongile Sodumo will as always be relied upon for their wealth of experience and calm heads when it comes to crunch time.

“I feel the guys are ready. They are excited about the season and we are up to the challenge,” said Sodumo.

“EP is a massive game every season for us and we want to win.

“There are number of youngsters in the squad this season so there is a nice vibe going and a strong spirit in the camp.”

Border’s 2013-14 bowler of the season Darryl Brown will be primed to unleash his talents. Marco Marais finds himself in action having broken into the Border team last season.

The exciting, powerful batsman should definitely get a run in Sunday’s T20, if he is not included in the three-day team.

“In your planning there always has to be a succession plan and I think it is the right time to bring through some of the youngsters,” said Plaatjes.

“We don’t want to throw them in the deep end, however, so we will look to phase them in over the season.”

The team is: Jerry Nqolo, Yanda Pangabantu, Burton de Wett, Vuyisa Makhapela, Brandon Williams, Clayton Bosch, Darryl Brown, Gionne Koopman, Abongile Sodumo (capt), Marco Marais, Thandolwethu Mnyaka, Mbulelo Budaza, Martin Walters and Ayabulela Gqamane.
