Lady Luck shuns top EC teams

It was a bad day for Eastern Cape teams yesterday with the Chevrolet Warriors losing their opening Ram Slam T20 match against the Knights at the New Wanderers, Johannesburg and Border losing to North West by five wickets in a CSA 50-Overs Challenge match at Buffalo Park.

A steady batting effort by North West saw them claim a comfortable victory with seven balls to spare after being set 249 to win.

Thandolwethu Mnyaka made the breakthrough for Border in the third over, having Kagiso Rapulana caught by Gionne Koopman for five and Grant Mokoena was second to fall with the score on 43, run out by some good fielding by Darryl Brown in the eighth over of the innings.

Brett Pelser was next to go for 19 as Mbulelo Budaza had him caught behind by Jongile Kilani and with North West slipping to 67/3, Border were firmly in the game.

However, three good partnerships followed to take the game away from Border and give North West a solid win. First Andre Malan and Nicky van den Bergh shared in a 61-run partnership before Burton de Wett had Van den Bergh caught and bowled with the score on 128. Malan and Niel Bredenkamp then added 46 runs before Malan was bowled by Koopman for an excellent 67.

Bredenkamp, 65 not out, was then joined by Bjorn Fortuin (28) and they guided North West home with a strong 75-run partnership.

In the morning session the match began with North West winning the toss and electing to field.

They enjoyed a good start as they made an early breakthrough in the fourth over when Vusumuzi Mazibuko had Kilani caught for five by Pelser with the score on nine. De Wett joined Koopman at the crease and the two shared in a solid 58-run partnership before De Wett was run out for an entertaining 31.

Martin Walters, who scored a century last time out, scored a handy 38 and Marco Marais became Koopman’s fourth partner of the innings.

The two took the score to 176 before Koopman’s top effort was finally ended for 69, with six fours, caught behind by Van den Bergh off the bowling of Fortuin.

l The New Wanderers was the venue for three Ram Slam T20 franchise matches which got the competition off to an exciting start.

The Warriors were matched against the Chevrolet Knights, who amassed 205 for five wickets in their 20 overs. Diego Rosier, with 55 not out and Gerhardt Abrahams, with 48, top-scored for the Knights while Jon-Jon Smuts with 2/28 was the most successful of the Warriors’ bowlers.

England import Craig Kieswetter struck a quick 51 but he had little support as the Warriors were dismissed for 131 in 18.5 overs, giving the Knights a 74-run victory. Fast bowler Dillon du Preez took four wickets for 25 for the Knights.

The Cape Cobras (207-5 in 20 overs), beat the Titans (193-4 off 20) by 14 runs.

The final game, the Lions versus the Dolphins, was due to start at 6pm last night and no details had been received when the Dispatch went to print.
