Zulu is on the move -Chippa

CHIPPA United have resigned themselves to the fact that star striker David Zulu will probably make a move to one of South Africa’s three glamour clubs in the January transfer window.

Zulu’s future has been the subject of much speculation recently with insiders going as far as to link him with a R4-million move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

His form in front of goal this season is what has caught the eye of potential buyers at Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, as they  look to bulk up their respective  strike-forces.

Zulu, 28, banged in goals for Black Leopards in the National First Division last season and has carried that form into the PSL, having scored four cracking goals in nine league matches.

Chippa  chief executive Peter Koutroulis said yesterday the chances were good that Zulu would be on his way in January but denied that any kind of deal had been penned with any club.

“Of course the clubs are interested in the boy,” the flamboyant Koutroulis said.

“But until now, we have not put our pen to any offer because, don’t forget, we must wait until the January transfer window.

“But, yes, we have got serious offers for the three big clubs and the chairman is busy with them. But until January, we can’t say where David Zulu is going.

“Yes, there is a serious possibility that the boy will leave in January. But, at the moment, the boy belongs to Chippa United, he plays for us. We waiting for him to score more goals for us,” added Koutroulis at a press conference yesterday.

Chippa called the media briefing yesterday to announce that popular former Kaizer Chiefs PRO Putco Mafani has joined the club as its manager of marketing, branding and communications.

With dwindling crowds a problem for PSL teams across the country, Chippa decided they needed someone to grow their brand and also get “bums on seats”.

“In my 28 years in this game I respect two people who are able to bring people to the game. They are Louis Tshakoane and Putco Mafani,” said Koutroulis yesterday.

“When the chairman and I spoke about coming to PE, we also spoke about Putco. I know him from his days with Kaizer Chiefs. He’s a man with full energy and he’s a man who knows how to bring people into the game. He knows about marketing the game and what a soccer club needs today.

“Now that we have had an unbeaten run and have started growing a supporter base, the time is right to bring in Putco.  He will do our marketing, communication and brand managing. He will do everything.”

Mafani said he is thrilled to have been given an opportunity to work in professional football again.

“I have been waiting for this moment, another chance for me to work with the beautiful game and interact with football lovers,” he said.

“And from everything I’ve done with Kaizer Chiefs and Platinum Stars, I’m very excited that I am now able to do something in  my home province.  Chippa have settled well on the field. The team is intimidating and people have respect and take notice. They’re saying that Chippa is here to stay and competing.

“I am willing to learn the culture here and make a positive impact in the growth of the club by recruiting supporters and building home game attendance”

Chippa next play Bidvest Wits at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium tomorrow night (7.30pm).
