'Gayle-force' to hit town

A ‘gayle-force’ is expected to blow  hot at  Buffalo Park today as the Chevrolet Warriors host the bizhub Highveld Lions in   a  Ram Slam T20 clash tonight.

Sixes are expected to be raining down across the ground as overseas professionals Chris Gayle and Craig Kieswetter look to unleash in the city.

“We need to get on the board now,” said Warriors coach Piet Botha.

“We have started the competition with two away losses and now we are playing the next few at home and need a few wins to get back in the mix.”

Gayle is expected to continue his onslaught after his fantastic debut in the Lions six-wicket win over the Sunfoil Dolphins on Sunday. He claimed 4/36 off four overs with the ball as he ripped through the Dolphins middle-order, before opening the batting,  crashing six fours and two sixes on his way to a 38-ball 56 to help the Lions chase the target down with seven balls to spare.

Gayle’s first match heroics will have given the Lions a lot of confidence and they will come to Buffalo Park looking for a bonus point win.

“Obviously Gayle is a world-class player in the format and we will have to assess him as the game goes,” said Botha.

The Warriors have not enjoyed a great start at all to the T20 competition, losing their opening match against the Knights by 74 runs before being brushed aside by the Dolphins in their second game on Wednesday night, this time by 54 runs.

However overseas pro Craig Kieswetter is looking odds on to be a very good signing having cracked an entertaining 38 ball 51 with five sixes and three fours in the losing battle against the Knights, while he struck a four and a six against the Dolphins, but was dismissed for 10 looking very dangerous.

His work behind the stumps is also very tidy and if the Warriors can pull it together and give him the necessary support there is no reason why they can’t put in a good string of results.

Sitting bottom of the log after two games however is not a good position to be in and they will need a positive result against the Lions tonight to get their campaign back on track.

Negating the massive threat of Gayle will be high up on their priority list while they will need an improved performance across-the-board if they want to get a positive result from the game.

The Warriors bowling hasn’t been great, conceding 205 and 181 and claiming five wickets in the first match and four in the second respectively and they will need to look at lowering the scoring rate, and what better way to do it than taking more wickets.

The Warriors will be looking to strike bowler Rusty Theron to make an impact, with the Dolphins game being his first match back from injury.

On the batting side scores of 131 all out and 127/8 are just not good enough for T20 cricket and the senior members in the team will need to come to the party.

Border batsman Somila Seyibokwe and bowler Lundi Mbane could be on show at their home-ground.

“We have been doing well in some departments and not in others and we need to execute our skills better towards the end of an innings,” said Botha.

Tickets cost R30 for scholars and R50 for adults and can be bought from www.ticketpros.co.za and at Buffalo Park from 9am today.

The Ram Slam win a million competition for catching a six with one hand will not be on tomorrow as the match is not televised, so will only be available at the Warriors next game at Buffalo Park against the Knights on November 21, which will be televised.
