Mission NFD as Mugeyi bounces back

William Mugeyi is back in the ABC Motsepe League Eastern Cape as head coach of FC Buffalo, a team he helped countryman and owner of the club Rodney Mashaya establish several years ago.

The former Bush Bucks and Zimbabwean national team left back boldly vowed he was back for “only one mission of helping the club gain promotion to the National First Division”.

He admitted though that his mission would not be easy but trusted that his charges would step up to the challenge.

To ensure consistency, he opted to retain “skilled” Simphiwe Nzama, who was interim coach, as his assistant, adding that he would also keep the majority of the players.

“FC buffalo is not just like any other team to me, it is very close to my heart because I was part and parcel of its formation with Mr Mashaya and I am now back to help them achieve bigger things,” he said.

“I am quite satisfied with how the team looks, having watched them play two games this past weekend and I believe we have the capacity and ability to challenge for the league and go on to compete in the national play-offs for promotion.”

Mugeyi is no stranger to winning things as a player, having helped his country win the Cosafa Cup in 2000, by scoring two goals in the final against Lesotho.

Now he wants to introduce a habit of triumph at the East London Club. He said: “What I like is that the EC is highly competitive and probably the toughest compared to other provinces. I therefore want to put up a strong side that will dominate the local league and go on to conquer in the national play-offs.” He will have plenty of time to fine-tune his squad that was booted out of the Nedbank Cup qualifiers last Saturday.

Mugeyi believed the timing of his arrival was perfect as the league had just begun and saw no need to reshuffle the squad, other than “reinforcing here and there to make the team even stronger. Besides, I have known some of these players through the years and the club has retained most of the squad from yesteryear”

Mugeyi, before his return to FC Buffalo, was assisting his twin brother Wilfred Mugeyi, who is current head coach of struggling Premier League side AmaZulu, with strategy and tactics.

According to William, his boys would have to sweat to achieve promotion as they were competing against sides such as Tembu Royals, Tornado, Highbury FC and Mthatha Bucks, which were “teams that have plenty of experience playing in this league”.Mashaya confirmed Mugeyi’s appointment.

“This being the final year of our plan to gain promotion to the next level , we saw it fit to lure Mugeyi as a man with a lot of experience, has tasted winning the league and has tasted national play-offs. Knowing him, I can declare that no one other than him will take us to the promised land.”

FC Buffalo last won the league in the 2010/11 season and went on to fail in the national play-offs in 2011.

They begin their 2014/15 campaign by visiting newcomers Mthatha City at Mthatha Stadium on Friday night.

Last season, they finished second and represented the province in the Nedbank Cup, which they will unfortunately miss out on this time after going down to Tornado in the play-offs last Saturday.
