O’Reilly reclaims Border 1 000 crown

Donovan O’Reilly timed his sprint finish to perfection to reclaim the Border 1000 title in an exciting finish at the end of the North East Express way (NEX) yesterday morning.

“Awie and Craig were fantastic and it was just a great race,” continued O’Reilly.

On the women’s side Cindy Schwulst was in top form to defend her 2013 title in style.

Schwulst managed the conditions superbly to power home on her own in a time of 2:01:45.

This was just the second time she has competed in the race, winning it both times and the impressive triathlon talent could dominate for years if she keeps competing.

Shannon Kirkhoff enjoyed a good race to finish second behind Schwulst, a minute and 23 seconds later, while Debbie Sannan rounded out the top three finishing in a time of 2:04:59.

In the 35km race from Macleantown a quick finish was expected and so it proved as the top three all finished in under an hour.

Çlint Dertze took the plaudits powering home in 57:46, a minute and 16 seconds ahead of Nico van Zyl in second, with Thomas Seidel taking third a second later.

The women’s side was won by Tarryn Wienand in 1:07:41, with Carol Cloete following in second a minute and 14 seconds later.

Jill Robinson rounded out the top three in a time of 1:12:53 to fill up the podium spots.

“It was a great race and I was very happy with the turnout,” said race organiser Brett Armstrong.

“The conditions were difficult but everyone still came out and we had a very exciting finish.”

With 212 riders turning out for the 80km race alone, the race was very well supported.
