Vaal thrash Fort Hare to make varsity final

Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Vaal University of Technology (VUT) will compete in today’s University Cricket B Week C division final at Buffalo Park after they triumphed in their semifinals yesterday afternoon.

CPUT comfortably brushed aside the University of Zululand to head into the final unbeaten after winning all four of their matches so far while VUT, who lost to CPUT in the group stage, triumphed over the previously unbeaten Fort Hare B team to make the final.

In the D division Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Buffalo City crushed the University of Venda (Venda) by eight wickets to make the D division final.

WSU claimed four massive wins on their way to the final and they beat Venda yesterday twice, first in their final group stage match in the morning session by nine wickets to finish top of the division and then again in the semi-final.

They will now face their namesake WSU Mthatha in the final after they beat WSU Ibika in the other semi.

In yesterday’s C division second semifinal VUT claimed a six-wicket win over Fort Hare B in a low scoring match after chasing down Fort Hare’s 58 all out and making 59/4 in 15.2 overs.

Fort Hare lost three wickets in the first three overs.

First opener Sive Xaluva fell for one, LBW to VUT’s Linda Mbethe in the second over, and Thabo Linake (1) and Edwin Toroveyi (1) followed in the next over, both claimed by Gontse Mothibinyane.

After an 11-run partnership another flurry of wickets saw them drop to 22/6.

The inning’s highest partnership between Ndyebo Mnyanda (11) and Thando Ngcete (10) followed before Ngcete became the seventh wicket to fall with the score on 36.

Mnyanda grafted away with the lower order, eventually being last man out as Fort Hare were bowled out for 58.

Mothibanyane, with 4/10 off his four overs, was the pick of the bowlers, while Mbethe, 2/11 off four and George Motha, 2/10 off 3.3, backed him up superbly while none of the bowlers conceded more than three runs an over.

Fort Hare saw a glimmer of hope at the start of the chase as VUT opener Niel Steenberg fell for a duck to Sauli, caught by Mbanga at point.

After a short rain delay, VUT took the score to 12 where Sauli, back for his second over, struck again, having Sivenkosi Mlondleni caught behind by keeper Lenake.

Opener Phadi followed back to the pavilion, run out by Mnyanda, as VUT slipped to 16/3.

Motha and Ryan Kluge steadied the ship with a 23-run partnership taking VUT to 39 before Kluge fell for 14 caught by Abuyisiwe Nguna off the bowling of Loyiso Socenywa.

Despite a disciplined bowling effort from Fort Hare, Motha (20*) and Mothibinyane (2*) guided VUT home without any further hassles.

Sauli was the pick of Fort Hare’s bowlers, posting 2/4 off his four overs.
