Border Country are coasting along quite nicely

The Border Country cricket team have enjoyed a top start to their campaign in the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Rural League 2014-15 season.

They are unbeaten after four matches with three wins and one no-result, and find themselves on the top of the coastal log on 14 points.

Border has three teams in the coastal pool and the Border Aloes team finds themselves safely in mid-table on eight points after an up-and-down start to their season with two wins and two losses.

The Border Village team sit second from bottom of the pool on four points after a difficult start to the season has seen them garner points through two no-results while suffering two losses in their other games.

“We are very happy with the way Border Country are currently playing, they are performing well and showcasing their talent,” said Border Rural Cricket co-ordinator Mnonopeli Mfenqe.

The competition has seen very different starts for the three Border sides, with Border Country being the form team to date.

They have enjoyed a top start in their three completed games so far, and could have possibly made it a perfect four had the elements not intervened to

deny them the chance.

With three matches left it will be important for Border Country to keep up their top form and keep the winning momentum going.

Following the pool stages the top five teams in the coastal and inland pools will go into the Rural CSA Tournament in February.

There, the teams will battle it out for glory. Border Country currently sit four points ahead of second-placed Boland West and third-placed Boland East on the log, and will want to keep that points buffer intact.

Border Aloes are fourth on eight points and well in the mix.

It is a big improvement already on last season when they were not able to get a win during the pool stages and thus did not make it to the tournament.

Border Village however sitting in seventh will need to improve drastically to make the tournament, and it is a far cry from last season when they qualified and finished as the highest Border team at fourth in the competition.

“We will be happy if as many Border sides as possible make it to the tournament and represent the Border region with pride,” said Mfenqe.

“Looking at the standard of players in the Border Country team I expect them to do well and finish better than last year when they came eighth out of the 10 teams.”

In the inland pool, North-West and Mpumalanga are top with 12 points apiece after three wins and one loss, with North West ahead only on run-rate. Gauteng, Griqualand West and KwaZulu-Natal Coastal make up the next three places on the log but things may change by the end of the pool stages.
