Davidson prove real astroturf warriors

The Davidson School boys U13 hockey team has been hard at work over the past few months preparing themselves for their first showing at a national schools’ tournament.

“As our training went on the boys became more disciplined and were even able to assist each other when some struggled to understand the skill they were learning,” said Golden.

“The best part for me was to see the boys using the skills in the game. That is when I knew that they mastered the skill.”

Three of Davidson’s players have been involved in the Border Academy hockey set-up, with star player and captain Somila Mapitiza the pick of the bunch.

Mapitiza has been offered a sports bursary to study at Dale College from next year and will be looking to make a good impression at the nationals.

To get to a tournament like this is difficult for some of the schools with smaller budgets, so Davidson were very happy for the help they received.

“A big thank you must go to those companies who have stepped up to give us so much support. Without them, this trip would not be possible,” said Golden.

“The Nkonkobe Municipality sponsored us with composite sticks and stickbags, School Sports at the Amathole Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) sponsored us with kit, SA Hockey with goalkeeper kit, DSRAC Eastern Cape for transport and accommodation, Fabian’s Motor Spares from King William’s Town for warm-up tops, Dean and Rudy Turner from Tremeers Butchery for a cash donation and Ramsuga Funerals of Fort Beaufort for Powerade concentrate.

“These companies were all superb in helping us reach our dream of competing at these nationals thanks to their help and generosity,” said Golden.
