EL schools get flying colours at G’town festival

With schools preparing to get into the swing of things next week, some school sport teams are enjoying a bit of pre-season preparation for the year ahead.

The Hudson Park High School and Cambridge High School cricket teams were in full action at the Grahamstown Schools Cricket Festival 2015 last week. Both teams finished unbeaten with Cambridge picking up two wins and Hudson a win and a draw.

The final day’s play was unfortunately washed out.

On day one Hudson Park came up against St Dominic’s from Port Elizabeth in a declaration match. Hudson batted first and the team enjoyed a good outing with the bat as they scored 278 all out in 55 overs.

Jason Niemand, with 90, and Troy Opperman, with 72, contributed the lions’ share of the runs with some top batting. Hudson’s bowlers then put in a strong performance.

St Dominic’s were reduced to 106/8 but managed to hang on for the draw. Luke Dallas with 3/17 was the pick of the bowlers and he was backed up well by Niemand who claimed 3/49.

Cambridge were up against a Grahamstown Rural XI in their first match. Bowling first, they managed to restrict the rural XI to 161 all out thanks to a fantastic bowling effort from Bekhi Qaba, who claimed 6/17. They managed to just get themselves over the line with two wickets in hand, Avile Thiso (76) and Lihle Nyondo (49) putting in two match-winning innings.

Day two saw Hudson come up against Menlo Park from Pretoria and Cambridge take on St Dominic’s in a second round of declaration matches.

In Hudson’s match they batted first and seemed in trouble when they were bowled out for 119. However a top bowling effort led again by Dallas with 3/21 and backed up well by Ntsika Njoloza 2/12 and Axola Ngwana 2/9, allowed them to bowl Menlo Park out and win by 14 runs.

Cambridge batted first in their match against St Dominic’s and posted a competitive 198 all out with Lihle Nyondo again having a good day with the bat, this time bringing up his half century and eventually going out for 75, while Lazara Edwards (36) chipped in.

They then bowled St Dominic’s all out for 129 as Athi Mbovane’s impressive 4/26 and Avile Thiso’s 3/18 decimated the batting line-up with Cambridge posting a 69-run win. Both teams should be reasonably happy with their performances and will be keen to get into some school cricketing action with the Algie Cup T20 competition kicking off around East London on January 28.

Hudson will open their account at home against Port Rex while Dale host Cambridge, Mdantsane play at Stirling and defending champs Selborne take on Grens away.
