Warriors aim to tame Cobras

The saying goes that success breeds success and the Chevrolet Warriors will be after more of the same when they host the Nashua Cape Cobras in a Sunfoil Series cricket fixture at St George’s Park starting today.

The Warriors produced an almost perfect performance in beating the Sunfoil Dolphins in East London at the weekend.

The batsmen filled their boots with plenty of runs and the bowlers knocked over the required 20 wickets even without Simon Harmer in their ranks.

The kingpin offspinner is back for the Warriors this week and will be looking to build on the success achieved for the Proteas against the West Indies by choking the life out of the Cobras.

He replaces batsman Colin Ackermann in the side meaning there will be slightly more pressure on the top order to perform once again.

“We are losing a specialist batter for a bowling allrounder which kicks our balance out a bit,” said interim coach Malibongwe Maketa yesterday.

“In saying that though, Simon can turn a game on its head. He can bowl many overs. He gives us more options to take 20 wickets.

“Now I expect more runs from the top order. They’ve been scoring the runs but now we need more,” he smiled.

The victory at Buffalo Park was their first of the campaign and the first since Maketa took over the reins from previous coach Piet Botha.

“The win in East London gives us confidence for the remainder of the series.

“It confirms the hard work we have been doing is starting to pay off. But we not looking too far ahead and taking it game by game.”

The seamers were particularly impressive with Basheer Walters and Andrew Birch sharing 12 of the wickets equally between them.

“The bowlers were fantastic in East London on a flat pitch.

“What we have done in the last two games is we have created pressure. We’ve bowled in partnerships and created pressure for long periods of time.

“That was probably the biggest headache for us in the first half of the season. We haven’t been able to create pressure. We’ve done that and hope to continue doing it.”

They will need to recreate those pressure situations against a resolute Cobras side, who although without a number of national players, will still prove a tough hurdle.

“The Cobras are a good team. Whoever they bring in, they seem to be able to carry on with what’s been left behind.

“They have a big pool of players. The young guys who come in are surrounded by good players like Justin Kemp and Dane Vilas. The seniors play a massive role in keeping the team together.”
