The 128th annual Buffalo Regatta kicked off in style yesterday as school teams battled it out in heats looking forward to get their crews into tomorrow’s day of finals.

In most cases the top two placed teams in the heats make it through to the  finals and then when needed the next  two fastest in that event’s heats made it too.

The first 14 heats of the day belonged to the boys and St Albans took the first heat, which was the junior men’s U19 3rd scull.

St Albans took first place in the next four heats before St Johns ended their streak.

Selborne College’s U19 men’s 1st double took second place in their heat to qualify.

Selborne’s U15 men’s quad beat St Albans.

St Albans, however, ruled the day of heats as they claimed 15 heat wins, with eight runner-up positions.

Grey High School and King Edward VII High were next with five first place heat finishes a piece, followed by St Andrew’s College, St Bendicts, Somerset and Rondebosch Boys on five heat wins each.

Selborne claimed four heat wins and five runner up finishes.

The first girls event took place close to 8.30am as the U16 women’s scull heats were battled out.

St Andrew’s School for Girls claimed a one-two finish in the first heat while Holy Rosary won the second heat.

St Andrew’s Girls finished as the best performing girls school with seven heat wins and seven runner-up places.

St Mary’s with four heat wins were the next best performing girl’s side.

Clarendon High School won the third heat of the U19 women’s first scull and then three runner-up finishes.

Today sees the 56th annual Selborne Sprints Regatta get under way.

Unlike the Buffalo Regatta, which is competed over a distance of 2km the Selborne Sprints is over a relatively short 500m stretch making for some very quick and exciting rowing.

The action kicks off at 6.30am and ends around 5pm.
