Border ladies take honours at home

Border women reigned supreme at the annual Border Ladies Golf Championship when Zethu Myeki superbly beat some of the best women’s golfing talent from around the country to claim the title at the East London Golf Club on Sunday afternoon.

Fellow Border golfer Demi Flanagan played fantastically to make it a Border one-two as she finished runner-up in the stroke play event.

South Africa ladies number four Cara Gorlei was the highest ranked golfer at the event, but despite lurking second at the end of 36 holes, she fell away in the last 18, finishing fifth in the end.

SA junior number three Woo-Ju Son finished third in the event while SA number seven and junior number two Kaleigh Telfer took fourth overall.

Top finishes were then had by Border golfers Yolanda Duma, who took sixth, Siviwe Duma who finished tied eighth and Millie Zim, who ended 13th overall.

The stroke play began in windy conditions on Saturday with Myeki doing well to end the first 18 holes on top after carding a round of 77.

Son was in second after hitting a 78, while Yolanda Duma and Flanagan sat third after rounds of 79.

Then followed two rounds of action to close out the championship.

Myeki and Gorlei carded the best rounds of the tournament, while Flanagan carded the same score of 72 in the final round.

Myeki was in the driving seat with 149 gross at the end of 36 holes, with Gorlei second on 153.

Flanagan 154, Son 155, Telfer 156 and Yolanda 157 all were in close attendance leading to a very interesting final round.

Despite pressure from Flanagan’s final round, Myeki posted a solid closing round of 75 to end on a 224 gross and claim the win by two shots from Flanagan.

“I have been working so hard, so I am glad the hard work has paid off,” said Myeki.

“I will obviously look to defend my stroke play title next year,” said Myeki.

Son’s closing 74 saw her finish third, three shots further back off Flanagan while Telfer’s 75 saw her gross 231 for fourth.

Gorlei’s closing 79 meant she ended up eight shots off the top.

Yesterday saw the finals of the Border closed Matchplay Championship battled out with Border’s best going head to head.

In the A division the two stars of the stroke play Myeki and Flanagan were again the main performers, with Flanagan defending her title and claiming her third Border Matchplay Champs in a row.

“I was confident going into the matchplay having won it before,” said Flanagan.

“I told myself I wanted to win it again and I managed to do it.”
