The ABC Motsepe League EC race for the 2014-15 championship is expected to gain steam this weekend with a full round of fixtures starting from tonight.

The main game features fourth-placed Highbury FC who are visiting FC Buffalo at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane tonight at 6pm.

The tussle will not be an easy one for either of the two giants because the venue is more of a neutral venue.

The home game rights for this one belong to Buffalo but they cannot play it at their usual homeground of Jan Smuts Stadium because of the ongoing provincial school athletics there.

It does not help at all that they are playing in Mdantsane, home to their local rivals Tornado.

This gives Highbury the edge but the Port Elizabeth side cannot be trusted if their blowing hot and cold track record is anything to go by.

Buffalo desperately need maximum points because they have been losing games they should have easily won.

As a result, they find themselves on position 10, which is a far cry from the title contenders they are known to have been in previous years.

If they are to give contenders like log-leaders Mthatha Bucks and second-placed Tornado a run, they need to collect three points fast.

This game is where it should start but Highbury are no pushovers.

They too need the points because a win will put them at third position with 27 points.

Elsewhere in Zwide, Port Elizabeth tonight, Tornado will pursue their mission of closing the gap between themselves and Bucks.

A victory will narrow the gap to three points, even on the number of games played at 14.

Tornado’s opponents this time around are Morning Stars, who really do not pose a threat if their below-par performance is to be considered.

Stars are placed 14th in the 17-team league with 14 points from 14 games.

FC Elliot, third on the log, are travelling to Riverside Stadium to collide with Kokstad Liverpool tomorrow afternoon.

On paper, this should be an easy game for the former because the latter are struggling and languishing at position 13 on the log.

But then again, in football, there are no guarantees and upsets are part and parcel of the game.

Relegation-threatened Cacadu United, who remain winless after 13 games and still at at the basement of the table are on the road to Mthatha City tomorrow.

It promises to be an interesting encounter as City will be hoping to bounce back to their winning ways following a string of not so good results.

Other games will see Swartkops United Brothers host La Liga in Motherwell later today while a Mthatha derby between Zimbane Killers and Mthatha Bucks is expected to be a thriller at Mthatha Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Angavu Stars, also playing tomorrow, will welcome Real City at the North End Stadium.
