Titanic battle on the cards

It's 12 games to the finish line, Parkside Sporting have been leading the pack since the beginning of the Safa-Buffalo City SAB Regional League 2014-15 season but they face-off with strong title contenders, Relatives in what could be a the league decider this Saturday.

The Parkside outfit, five points ahead of their foes have been the weapon of mass destruction in the league bulldozing everyone on their way, especially when playing at their fortress, North End Stadium in which they are welcoming Relatives.

However, the visitors enjoyed an impressive 100% winning record in three games they have played in the stadium’s artificial pitch in the ongoing season.

On paper, when one compares the individual player capability from both sides, they easily have the best squads in the 16-club league.

This qualifies the game between the two as the clash of the titans.

Sporting and Relatives, the highest scoring clubs in the league, have between them scored 95 goals in 36 matches.

Almost half of those have been courtesy of the goalscoring prowess of two of the league’s top strikers, Sporting’s Angel Snyman and Relatives’ Mfundo “Banda” Bonyongo.

The duo will be the difference come Saturday afternoon in what is expected to be a thriller with goals galore.

As much as the two clubs are high scoring, they are not the best in shutting the back door.

Taking a look at goals conceded, they are number three and four on the list behind Future Tigers and African Bombers.

The biggest battle though in this all-important clash will be fought in the middle of the park where Thandokuhle “Scara” Lukhozi and Co of Relatives will collide head-on with Sporting’s Mawethu Williams and his men.

Sporting and their Mdantsane-based visitors are equally blessed with gifted midfielders and the centre of the field is where the game will be lost or won come Saturday.

If history is anything to go by, Sporting should win the game, having emerged victorious in this campaign’s previous two meetings with Relatives.

Both games were in the latter’s backyard, something that speaks volumes about Sporting’s superiority to Relatives.

On the other end though, the Mdantsane outfit is determined to break the hoodoo of falling short in contests with their Parkside rivals despite their sheer dominance against the other 14.

As to who will come out a winner from this confrontation, this scribe’s guess is as good as that of football-loving people expected to come out in their numbers on Saturday.

If Sporting win this one, likelihood is that their march towards championship will be a rather smooth one because there will only be two opponents in the form of Tigers and Cloud 9 with the potential to defeat them in the last 11 games.

Relatives, on the other side has several tough games ahead of them and a win in this big one may be a much-needed confidence booster.

Meanwhile, this weekend is likely to see double-headers being played as Safa-Buffalo City is desperate to play catch-up due to previously postponed fixtures.

According to Safa-BC deputy president and director of competitions, Abel Iglesias, the league games that were supposed to be played over the Easter weekend are likely to be slotted in for this coming Sunday.
