Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will be approached to investigate the non-payment of boxers.
This emerged from a meeting by Eastern Cape Promoters Association (ECPA)‚ which discussed the failure of individuals‚ including Boxing SA‚ to pay boxers their money.
The gathering was convened after Premier Boxing League (PBL) owner Dicksy Ngqula failed to pay four boxers their prize money totalling R1.6-million‚ including a R1-million to eventual winner Xolisani Ndongeni.
Other boxers owed money since February are Macbute Sinyabi‚ Toto Helebe and Makazole Tete‚ who are each entitled to R200 000 for winning their respective divisions.
Boxers and officials who participated in a Mamali Promotions event on March 22 are also yet to receive their money‚ including those who fought in Fort Beaufort a week later.
The severity of the matter is such that the BS‚ which is supposed to ensure that boxers are protected‚ has also violated their rights by not honouring the payments.
ECPA secretary Andile Sidinile said the structure had taken a decision to approach Madonsela to probe Ngqula’s failure to honour the payments.
“Taxpayers’ money was used here and all the funders have confirmed giving Ngqula the money‚ but still the poor boxers have not been paid‚” Sidinile said.
“We cannot take this lying down because it tarnishes the image of boxing.”
