Top surfers wait to catch JBay’s big waves

The World Surfing League’s sixth stop for the 2015 Samsung Galaxy Champion Tour is home of the picturesque wave – Supertubes, Jeffery’s Bay.

The beautiful Eastern Cape shoreline will host 34 international surfers and two wild card entries competing in what we all hope to be great surf.

The international contest will run over a waiting period from July 8 to 19.

Unfortunately day one was announced as a ‘lay day’.

“We expect a low pressure to build up over the next couple of days and bring us the conditions we need”, said WSL commentator Martin Potter.

Current surfing conditions have not prevented surfers from taking advantage of the time to hone their skills. Weather charts indicate conditions should improve over the next few days with a possible start on Saturday.

Jordy Smith, of the World Surfing League, and Slade Prestwich, a wild card candidate, are the only two South Africans flying the flag at this year’s Jeffrey’s Bay Open.

Smith, recovering from an injury, has spent more time than most getting used to the perfect but cold waves in Jeffrey’s Bay.

Said Smith: “I got knocked out my last event earlier than I wanted, but that gave me more time to be here and practise.”

Prestwich is currently on the World Qualifying Series, and working hard to gain points in order to join the World Circuit Tour.

“Most of the guys on the WCT are chasing the world title, so I have nothing to lose but have fun and surf my best,” said wild card winner Prestwich.

Prestwich is up against Adriano de Souza (Brazil) and Kolohe Andio (USA) in heat six.

Smith is up against Bede Durbidge (AUS) and WSL Rookie, Ricardo Christie (NZL) in heat 11.

Some of the world’s biggest surfing names have been stretching their legs and getting into the pace of Jeffrey’s Bay during the off-time.

Current world number one Adriano de Souze has stood out in the free surfs along with Australians Joel Parkinson and Taj Burrow.

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater is also due to surf, taking to Supertubes in heat eight of the contest.
