Brown steps into the breach on cue

Border stalwart Darryl Brown has picked up where he left off last season, with a top start to the new season.

All-rounder Brown, who’s fantastic form over the past couple of years saw him receive a recall to the Warriors set-up in the second half of last season, saw his batting come to the fore in superb fashion as he dug the franchise side out of a number of holes in the matches he played.

Known more for his bowling prowess at Border than his batting, Brown will be happy to see the other half of his game become just as recognised.

With Border kicking off their season in the Africa Cup T20 in Potchefstroom, Brown was straight back to his old heroics as he guided Border to victory in their first game.

Chasing just 105 to win after a superb bowling effort had restricted North West to 104/8 in their 20 overs, Brown arrived at the crease with Border on 12/3.

He batted through the innings as he watched his partners fall by the wayside, in the end cracking a match-winning 63 not out off 50 balls with three fours and four sixes.

“I am happy with what I’m doing and how I’m going about my game, but we need to do it as a team to be successful,” said Brown.

In Border’s second match against Boland Brown only managed one with the bat, and although Border were soundly beaten by eight wickets, Brown emerged as the only bowler to claim a wicket and his figures of 1/15 off 2.2 overs were very respectable.

Border’s third match against KwaZulu-Natal Inland got off to a disastrous start as Inland raced to 75/0 after eight overs.

The introduction of Brown broke the partnership as he removed Sarel Erwee for 35, caught by Lundi Mbane and then bowled new Proteas recruit Khaya Zondo for five in his next over.

Brown ended with figures of 2/33 from his four overs and was the only successful Border bowler as Inland scored a match-winning 181/2 in their 20 overs.

“I was happy to get a few wickets but there are inconsistencies in my bowling, so I have quite a bit of work to do in the next few weeks before the start of the season,” said Brown.

In the end Border could not qualify for the semifinals of the competition, losing their last two games after winning the first and they will need to put in some work before the season gets under way.

“We didn’t play to the best of our ability, as we didn’t execute our skills that well, but we did show in glimpses that we can compete and do very well at this level,” said Brown.

“You learn the standard that is required to be successful at this level so now the guys know where they fall short and what we have to do to get better.

“We can always build on this and get better.”

Brown now turns his focus to the new season with an eye on an extended run with the Warriors.

“I would like to play franchise cricket on a regular basis this season and I would also like to get much stronger and fitter than what I am at the moment which will lead to better performances.”
