Elliot bemused by the sudden move by coach

Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League log-leaders FC Elliot may be in trouble tomorrow when the face off with Future Tigers after their highly rated and influential coach Mondli Funani packed his bags and left the club early this week.

Confusion is rife at the unbeaten Elliot with Funani telling the Daily Dispatch that he was no longer in the employ of the club while club boss Monwabisi Thethelwa believes the opposite is true.

“I am no longer employed by FC Elliot so I cannot speak on their behalf,” said Funani yesterday when asked about the good run Elliot have had thus far with no blemish in five outings.

“Actually, I quit on Monday due to internal issues I cannot divulge in public.”

Elliot owner, Thethelwa said: “As far as I am concerned Mondli Funani is our coach because he has not told me that he is resigning.

“I was away in Joburg for business this week but I was informed that he did not attend our match on Wednesday and to that effect I have since scheduled to meet him over the weekend to find out why.”

A member of the Mthatha Bucks top brass confirmed to this newspaper that Funani, who is from Mthatha, was among candidates interviewed on Wednesday for the vacant coaching job at the club which may spell trouble for Elliot.

Elliot and Matta Milan remain the only clubs without a defeat thus far in the 2015-16 season and both are on 13 points from five matches with the latter on the log summit by virtue of their superior goal difference.

Elliot have scored a whopping 12 goals in just five matches while leaking only two in the process.

When they host Tigers at the Elliot High School Ground tomorrow at 3pm, second-placed Milan will be away to struggling bottom-of-the-table Emperors FC.

Elsewhere this afternoon FC Buffalo welcome Swartkops Valley United Brothers aka SUBS at the Jan Smuts Stadium in East London.

The East London outfit will be hoping to continue their winning ways following their 2-0 victory over Tigers midweek.

They will not have it easy though because SUBS have only lost once, played to three draws and lost a single match.

The Friday football fever in East London will also be felt in Mdantsane at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium where Tornado lock horns with Highbury FC.

Tornado, fourth on the log, are favourites to collect maximum points against a struggling Highbury who may well get their second win having proved to be the hoodoo team for the hosts in recent years.

Also this afternoon Mthatha City – 10th on the standings – are on the road to Morning Stars in Zwide Stadium, Port Elizabeth while battling Young Ideas are at home against EC BEEs.

Back to tomorrow, Kokstad Liverpool will collide with third-placed Zimbane Killers at the Riverview Stadium in Kokstad at 3pm while Blackburn Rovers will be hoping to redeem themselves at the expense of Lion City at Central Stadium in Uitenhage.
