Braced for Berlin extravaganza

The Berlin November horse-racing event scheduled for this Saturday has extravaganza written all over it. With just five days to go, tickets are selling like hot cakes in winter.

The Prime Executive Lounge VIP hospitality package going for R1500 per person is sold out. More than 200 horses have been registered and registration has closed.

Race organisers are already hard at work erecting marquees at the racecourse and SPCA officials been conducting their inspections.

Berlin November chairman Luthando Bara said they were expecting no less than 10000 spectators to grace the event.

This is 4000 more than last edition’s 6000. Everyone will get value for their money spent, he promised, with virtually everyone with interest in sport, fashion, music, arts and culture, and entertainment catered for.

According to Bara, the public interest in the race was rising mostly because of certain improvements and new innovations in this year’s edition.

The support shown by the provincial government in the brand had also been a major boost, he added, with Premier Phumulo Masualle expected to attend leading the entire provincial government.

True to the race’s traditional flavour, all local traditional chiefs around the King William’s Town area and other parts of the province have confirmed that they will be attending.

“Saturday is going to be a bang and this we are judging by the rate at which tickets are selling,” said Bara.

“We expect no less than 10000 people to descend on Berlin this coming Saturday as we believe we have done our part to up the standard.

“For instance we did not have the fashion show last year but this time around people can expect it to be bigger than anything else on the day because it’s how one dresses that sets them apart from the rest.”

Some of the new innovation to be implemented this year include a business village to feature craft exhibitions already sold out with more than 60 people.

Impressively the event is also attracting people from outside the province.

With SAA having dropped plane ticket prices for East London flights by 40%, Bara was optimistic that this will be to Berlin November’s advantage.

“Not only that but remember through this event, we are also advocates of tourism economy will also benefit, especially from the people coming from other provinces.”

But what would be a horse-racing show be without celebrities.

In Berlin, scores of them, local and national will be in the mix.

Thabiso Mamabolo otherwise popularly known as tbose in SABC1 leading soapie – Skeem Saam and Nomuzi – will be featuring local celebrities, TruFM’s Brian Ndevu and Siya Davane of Fort Hare FM.

Music acts lined up to entertain the crowds include Heavy K, Vetkuk & Mahoota and Maggz & Moozlie and many more.

Bara encouraged the public to get themselves the general access tickets for free, but the lifestyle village which boast the festival and hospitality marquees is R100. The VIP package is R250 and the Garden Village VIP package which gets a group of four people special treatment for only R1400 which are only categories still available but expected to be sold out before Friday.
