Harlequins are good as gold at gala

Harlequins club enjoyed a great Border swimming champs recently as they claimed the overall win at the very competitive gala held earlier this month.

The rainy and windy conditions were not ideal. However, the gala went ahead and the kids put in performances for their respective clubs.

In the end Harlequins finished first, thanks to their girls finishing first and boys third, combining for top spot overall with 5766 points, 64 points ahead of Ultimate Swim Club (USC) in second while Vikings finished third with 4479 points.

The Harlequins girls were in particularly good form scoring 3437 points, while Aquanova girls managed 2901 points and USC girls 2203.

USC finished top of the boys standings with 3498, while Vikings claimed 2428 points and Harlequins 2329.

In all Harlequins brought in 180 medals which included 58 gold, 71 silver and 51 bronze.

“This was team sport at its best. Every swimmer that swam added points to our tally,” said Harlequins coach Vionne Skinner.

Skinner, along with her son Cajun and daughter Tazlin Birch, coached the club this year and will be proud of their swimmers’ efforts.

“Our slogan and war cry is ‘in water we fly’ as we are named after the Harlequins Duck which is the fastest swimming duck,” explained Skinner.

“Many Personal Best’s were swum, qualifying many swimmers for the Regional Level 1 and 2 galas.”

Some top performances were enjoyed by many of the swimmers.

Meralda Terblanche and Christian Muller both qualified for Level 3 Junior Nationals, while Merisa Oelofse qualified for Youth Nationals. Catherine Eland managed to break four of her existing provincial records – in the 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 200m individual medley.

At the meet Harlequins’ top male scorers were Estiaan Terblanch, Luke Ansell and Joshua Olivier while the top female scorers were Eland, Phelo Bacela and Amy Swart.

“This was a team effort and it was with the participation of all our swimmers that we achieved our win,” said Skinner. “This season has been loaded with many blessings.

“We will be the club to beat next year so the pressure is on.”
