No Chippa for EL – for now

Chippa United have shelved plans to take their last game of the year to East London but will “continue to engage” with the municipality over staging future matches at Buffalo City Stadium.

Chippa applied last month to move their match against Bloemfontein Celtic on Friday, December 18 from the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth to East London, which is the club’s designated alternate venue.

But the Premier Soccer League were unimpressed with the pitch conditions when they sent their chief operations officer Ronnie Schloss to inspect the East London stadium, which has not seen any top-flight action since the days of Mthatha Bucks.

A deadline to improve the pitch conditions was imposed but Chippa have since had a change of heart and shelved immediate plans to take a game to the Eastern Cape’s other major coastal centre.

“But we will continue to engage with the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality,” confirmed their head of marketing and communications Luthando Zibeko.

PSL clubs may use two home venues per season, which is the reason Kaizer Chiefs have moved three home games to Cape Town over the next months and SuperSport United often host matches at Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium.
