Border no match for dominant North West

Liam Lindsay scored a half-century to help Eastern Province eke out a draw with Northerns in a low-scoring encounter on the opening day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 Cricket Week at NMMU Oval yesterday.

Chasing 140 for a first innings victory, Northerns fell four runs short of their target, finishing on 136 for six in 66 overs.

Northerns captain Willem Ludick won the toss and opted to field. He must have wondered if he had chosen the correct option as the home team eased their way to 40 without loss in the 12th over.

But that proved to be the highest partnership of the EP innings.

EP stuttered from this point and were dismissed for 139 in 61.4 overs.

Grey High’s Lindsay, however, stood out like a beacon as he stuck around at the crease for just short of three hours for his 64.

He faced 130 balls in his innings and struck nine fours and a six.

Northerns offspinner Dean Foxcroft was superb in his 17 overs, taking five wickets for 24 runs, three of them top order victims.

Ludick made 30 in Northerns’ innings while Ruan de Swardt finished on 33 not out.

lBorder also played on the opening day and lost on the first innings to North West at NMMU C.

Border called correctly at the toss and put themselves in to bat.

But they could only muster 107 in their first innings.

Mncedisi Malika (29) and Axola Ngwana (23 not out) were the only Border batsmen to make any noteworthy contributions.

Seamer Tshepo Seroalo for North West claimed five scalps for 22 runs in only eight overs.

In reply, Ruan Haasbroek scored the first century of the week before North West declared their innings on 221 for four. His 101 not out came off 142 balls and included nine fours and three maximums.

Border made 43 for one in their second innings before time was called for the day.
