A superb effort by all-rounder Bamanye Xengxe helped Border secure a draw, after he gave them a late chance of claiming an unlikely innings win in their cricket match against Limpopo yesterday.

It was the second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 Cricket week, played at Woodridge College just outside of Port Elizabeth, and saw a tight match end all square after Border were dismissed for 198, with Limpopo reaching 161/6 when time was called.

Xengxe starred with the bat, scoring 59, opened the bowling, striking early to reduce Limpopo to 4/2 and then played a part in two late runouts that stopped Limpopo in their tracks when they were looking to chase down Border’s total.

In the first over of their chase Aubrey van Renen was bowled by Xengxe for a duck, with Tumisan Letsoalo then trapped in front for another duck at the start of Xengxe’s third over with them on 4/2.

However a third-wicket partnership of 57 between Rassie Pretorius (31) and Morne Venter led the revival and a fifth wicket stand of 55 between Venter and Nduvho Mphidi put Limpopo in a great position to make a late charge for Border’s total.

However, with Limpopo seemingly well set on 161/4, with Venter on 70 and Mphidi on 27, Xengxe was bowling and, off the last ball of his over, bowling to Mphidi, they attempted to run two and Xengxe was on hand to collect a ball from Winray Christoffels and break the stumps with Venter out of his ground to end the good partnership.

Off the first ball of the next over it was Xengxe turned provider as he threw the ball to keeper Mncedisi Malika, who whipped off the bails with new batsman Asad Patel out for a duck without facing a ball.

Mphidi and new man Sahil Patel went into preservation mode and they blocked out the final 18 balls to secure the draw.

In the morning Border won the toss and elected to bat.

They got off to a decent start as openers Nathan Roux and Athi Mfazwe shared a 36-run partnership in the first 10 overs. However, Roux (eight) was the first to fall, bringing captain Malika to the crease.

Having got them past 50 and with the score on 52, Mfazwe was trapped in front by Sahil Patel for 19.

Border slipped to 69/4 as James Monoghan (five) and Sinethemba Qeshile (0) were dismissed within 14 balls of each other.

Christoffels and Malika shared a 35-run partnership, before Malika, nearing a half century on 39, was caught behind off the bowling of Don Radebe with the score on 104.

This brought Xengxe to the crease and he and Christoffels shared a promising 33-run stand, only for Christoffels to be run out for 19.

Xengxe dominated the following 45-run partnership with Axola Ngwana as they took Border to 182/6, with Xengxe passing 50, but with his dismissal on 59 the final four Border wickets fell for 16 runs.
