Sono delighted with in form cosmos

Jomo Sono is delighted with the form that his club have been showing in recent weeks and says overall he has much to be satisfied with since Jomo Cosmos returned to the top flight.

Sono says Cosmos have overcome a distinct disadvantage in comparison to other PSL teams because of the lack of time to prepare for the new campaign because the promotion- relegation play-offs run so late at the end of the previous season.

“It’s a big disadvantage and in future we have to allow the NFD to finish earlier. They could be playing on the Fifa international weeks (when the PSL closes for Bafana Bafana action) as all the other major second divisions in Spain, Italy and elsewhere do. But they are not really given much of a chance when they finish the season so late and then have little turnaround time before they have to start the new season.”

Sono says this is why his club started off slowly, unable to get the necessary time to blend properly before the Absa Premiership campaign was underway in earnest.

But Cosmos’ recent form has him crowing from the sidelines, especially after they beat Chippa United 4-3 in their last league game on November 22.

“Eighty percent of the games we’ve played so far we could have won. We have created a lot of chances. But I said some time ago that when we get going we can be a factor. It could have happened against Sundowns, we did well against Chiefs and then we showed what we could do against Chippa.”

Sono agrees with the assertion of several other coaches that their new home ground at Olen Park in Potchefstroom could become something of a fortress.

“It’s compact and it’s small and suits the way we play. We like to press our opponents high up the field and we can do it so well in Potch. And once we get the ball we have pace for the quick counter attack. To be honest, the 4-3 score line against Chippa came a lot from that but it should really have been 8-3,” said Sono.

His players have also gained in mental strength, the veteran coach added: “If a team scored first again them, you could see their heads go down and the disbelief set in. It’s a mental thing but that’s a part of the game that every coach has to work on.

“Our players have seen their own potential when they have matched Chiefs and Sundowns pound for pound.”

Cosmos lie 14th in the Premier Soccer League standings but are a healthy five points clear of the drop zone. They have won two of their 11 league games to date. Their next game is at Free State Stars on Saturday, December
