Libode-born development soccer coach Glen Minnie has been appointed the head coach of the Chippa United Multichoice Diski Challenge team.

Minnie now faces the mammoth task of ensuring that the Chippa side finishes in a more respectable position than the 14th place they currently occupy with six matches to go before the end of the season.

But his mandate extends beyond this season as he is expected to criss-cross the province and identify talent for the Chippa reserve side with the ultimate goal of an MDC side that is predominantly comprised of home-grown players.

The post was left vacant by Velile Dyaloyi, who joined Mthatha Bucks in the National First Division.

Chippa PRO and manager Luthando Zibeko said the club was confident that Minnie was the perfect man for the job.

According to him, Chippa chairman Siviwe Mpengesi was blown away by Minnie’s track record of his involvement in grassroots soccer in the province.

“We believe Mr Minnie is the right guy to take our reserve side forward mainly because of his eye for talent,” said Zibeko.

“He is someone the chairman has confidence in, so are his capabilities and all we have to do as the club is give him all the support he will need to succeed.”

Minnie cut his coaching teeth in East London more than 15 years ago at the East London Central LFA where he coached in their junior structures.

The 45-year-old then went on to mentor Shiloh FC in the Buffalo City SAB Regional League and led the side to back-to-back championships in the 2012-13 season and the 2013-14 campaign.

Minnie said it was an honour to be appointed in a role where he would be focusing on development – something he has been doing since his involvement in coaching.

“I am excited, especially this being my debut in a professional setup, and what an honour for this to happen in my home province of the Eastern Cape,” he said.

The former Shiloh man will hit the ground running with an MDC clash against third-placed Maritzburg United on Sunday.

He was brimming with confidence and affirmed his readiness for the challenge.

“We have a decent team with a talented bunch of youngsters and I am confident we will be ready for Maritzburg come Sunday,” he explained.

“My priority though in my new role going forward is the mandate I was given by the chairman to ensure that the majority of players in this MDC team are of Eastern Cape origin and develop them to a level of being ready to graduate for the PSL side.”
