Relegation quicksand is much too close to comfort for Bucks

Mthatha Bucks head coach Velile Dyaloyi has expressed concern over his strikers’ lack of confidence in front of goals ahead of their must-win encounter with Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga this afternoon.Dyaloyi, whose unbeaten run at Bucks came to an abrupt end at the weekend when his side went down 1-0 at the expense of Baroka FC, said his charges needed to be meaner in attack if they are to collect maximum points against Spurs.

The Mthatha outfit are 15th on the logstandings, equal on 11 points with rock bottom Moroka Swallows, and failure to win today may see them drop to the last spot, especially if the Dube Birds manage to snatch a draw or victory when they meet log leaders Baroka on Sunday.

“The loss against Baroka dented our calculations as we had planned to collect at least four points in that match and the Spurs one,” said Dyaloyi.

“As such, we need to win at all cost (today) so we can at least get three points.

“The team is playing well and there is nothing more I can ask from my boys but some players are afraid to take responsibility in front of goals,” he continued.

“With more self-confidence upfront, I am sure nothing would stop us from winning.”

Indeed Bucks are shy in front of goals having scored only nine in 15 matches, and happen to be the joint lowest scoring side with 13th-placed African Warriors.

Even the beleaguered Swallows has found the back of the net more than Bucks – 10 times.

Dyaloyi has warned that lack of scoring may plunge his side in trouble of “hoping that so and so beats so and so, so that we can survive relegation.

“But we do not want that. We must get the job done by ourselves and move away from the relegation zone.”

According to him, the only way for surviving relegation was for his charges to go all out in the remaining matches and “work hard to win for that is what is required in this highly competitive league”.

It is not all doom and gloom for Bucks because the gap between them and 11th position is a mere five points.

Two wins in a row for them can change the whole complexion of what is currently taking place in the fight for survival at the bottom.

On the other end of the table where every club aspires to be, Baroka FC are leading the pack with 35 points from 15 outings, five points adrift of second-placed Cape Town All Stars who have been blowing hot and cold of late.
