Top-CLASS women’s cricket is on the horizon as the Proteas Women against West Indies one-day series to be played in East London is just under a month away. This should give a big boost to women’s cricket on the Border and the series is expected to garner interest with four matches being played in the region, three at Buffalo Park and one in Alice.

“It is great that CSA is bringing the Proteas women to East London,” Border’s Caroline Krause, who is a part of the local organising committee said.

“We are looking forward to it and it will be fantastic to have this calibre of women’s cricket on show here.”

The Proteas will be starting a big cricketing year next week when they take on England in a one-day and T20 series that will finish on February 21. Three days later on February 24 they will face the West Indies for the first time at Buffalo Park with two further one-day games to be played.

Border women star Ayabonga Khaka is expected to feature in the Proteas squad.

The West Indies women are set to arrive in East London earlier for a warm-up match against a combined Border and Eastern Province team at Fort Hare in Alice on February 22.

This will be a great opportunity for the visiting side to see where some of the local players come from.

“We would like the West Indies ladies to link up and see a few club matches out there so they can see where our players come from,” said Krause.

“We think it would be a great experience for them and for them then to play a match in Alice will be massive for ladies cricket in the region.”

Plans are also afoot, according to Krause, to organise a few clinics in East London during the tour to expose women’s cricket to young enthusiasts so that they can see there is a future in the sport.

Also adding to the feast of women’s cricket over the period is the Border and EP women’s teams playing against each other in the league over the same weekend that the Proteas are playing.

“With such a big league match against our neighbours in East London at the same time it just adds to the occasion,” said Krause.

It seems that some exciting times can be expected for women’s cricket in the region and what happens over the week of action could go a long way to boosting cricket on the Border.
