Buffalo in hunt for redemption

Still licking their wounds after losing to their bitter rivals Tornado last weekend coach William Mugeyi is confident that his side will bounce back when they host Kokstad Liverpool in an ABC Motsepe League clash at the Jan Smuts Stadium in East London today.

Mugeyi was adamant that his side can still challenge for honours although they are currently 12 points adrift of log-leaders Lion City.

For him, in football it is never too late, especially with 15 matches to the finish line of the 2015-16 campaign.

Against Liverpool this afternoon, his Buffalo side will have to be sharper in front of goals as that was their letdown in the Tornado defeat, said Mugeyi.

If history is anything to by, Buffalo should have it easy against Liverpool who they beat 1-0 in their backyard already this season in their first round meeting.

The EL outfit also draws confidence from the fact that their foes come from a

4-0 heavy loss in a clash with relegation candidates – Emperors FC.

In fact Mugeyi said his charges must play the way they did against Tornado, but be more composed in front of goal.

“Our problem is one – we are not finishing off our scoring chances otherwise we do dominate our opponents like we did to Tornado last weekend, but were letdown by failure to convert,” said the former Zimbabwean international.

“We need to win this one and redeem ourselves because we are competing for the championship much as many would like to believe otherwise when they look at the gap between us and log-leaders.

“However, this is football and anything is possible. In 2010 we were 11 points behind log-leaders halfway through to the season but we ended up winning the title seven points clear,” he said.

Buffalo are on position six on the log-standing with 23 points from 14 matches.

Victory today will close the gap between them and league toppers City to nine points in 15 matches played by both.

City are engaged in a tricky one tomorrow afternoon with high-flying EC Bees at the Bisho Stadium.

Bees, fifth on the log with 11 points behind City are also in the title race and will be out for maximum points, especially playing at home.

City will not afford a loss in Bhisho, especially with second-placed Tornado looking good for victory when they visit relegation zone dwellers Blackburn Rovers in Rosedale.

Things are looking bad for Nelson Mandela Bay Metro clubs in the league, five of who make up the bottom five.

As things stand, it appears the two clubs set for relegation when the season comes to an end will be NMBM clubs.
