Mthatha hero ‘Toyitoy’ cruises to another win

Siphamandla Baleni continued to stake his claim as one the best mini-flyweight boxers in the country when he scored an eight-round stoppage over outgunned Lonwabo Roboshi at OR Tambo Hall in Mthatha on Friday.

The aggressive local hero took the fight to the Port Elizabeth visitor from the first round as he pressed on the action, forcing Roboshi to fight on the back foot.

However, Roboshi sternly refused to wilt until a barrage of blows forced the referee to intervene to give Baleni a third straight victory since his controversial loss to Siyabonga Siyo.

Baleni, nicknamed “Toyitoy”, has snubbed the SA title held by Daluxolo Mangcotywa, who stopped Roboshi after the title was relinquished by Baleni’s stablemate Simpiwe Konkco.

It would, however, be interesting to see what would happen if Baleni and Mangcotywa were to get it on – especially given the rivalry between their promoters Ayanda Matiti and Andile Sidinile.

In another clash on the card promoted by Fireworks, Lima and Sijuta, Sinethemba Bam outscored Phila Gola to render the latter to a second defeat in a row following his loss to Bonakele Bhikitsha.

Bam and Mnikelo Ndema, who are both trained by Zola Koti in Cape Town, came in as dark horses.

Ndema suffered a first-round stoppage at the hands of former SA flyweight contender Morris Lento, who now campaigns in the bantamweight division.

Zama Zokhwe continued with his winning ways when he overcame Simpiwe Mayeza with a fifth-round knockout in their junior featherweight scrap. Other results: Bongani Mbiko TKO 3 Ricardo Heneke (light); Siseko Nkohliso TKO1 Nkosikho Sibunzi (bantam). — DDR
