Victorious Buffalo to improve attack

FC Buffalo coach William Mugeyi is confident his side are “slowly but surely” regaining their rhythm following a 3-1 thumping of Kokstad Liverpool in an ABC Motsepe League clash at Jan Smuts Stadium at the weekend.

Mugeyi’s men, although conceding in the opening minute of the game, came back strongly to secure victory through goals from Angel Snyman, Charles Gallagher and Ruwan Xundu.

According to Mugeyi, the victory was the first step in the right direction as the chase for the championship continued.

However, his charges needed to be more clinical in front of the goalposts, and win when it mattered the most.

“I am happy we have redeemed ourselves from the loss we suffered against Tornado, and I must say my boys played well and according to instructions,” Mugeyi said.

“This was a hard-earned three points. I was disappointed we conceded very early in the match – which we should not do in the future.

“But, more importantly, we showed character and came back to win.

“I am still not happy with our attack prowess because we missed a lot of chances we should have easily buried, and we need to be more clinical in front of goals if we are to challenge for the championship,” he said.

Buffalo have moved to fifth place, with 26 points from 15 outings with a game in hand, 10 points behind log-leaders Lion City, who seem to be running away with the title. They are still to play 11 of their 14 remaining matches in Port Elizabeth – their home base.

Come Saturday, Buffalo have a tricky date with fourth-placed Zimbane Killers in Lusikisiki.

Killers appear to have lost their mojo this year, having dropped from the log summit, which Buffalo will be hoping to capitalise on.

While Mugeyi was thrilled by the victory, his Liverpool counterpart Bornface Gondowe believed Buffalo had 12 men on the field – including the referee.

“Football in the Eastern Cape is not going anywhere with this kind of officiating,” Gondowe said. “The referee came through for them, with biased decisions that a suspicion of match-fixing would not be far-fetched. Anyway, I must commend my boys for their fighting spirit, even in the face of adversity.”
