The Warriors will play their second match in a row at Buffalo Park on Sunday when they take on the Knights.

After their exciting 14-run win over the Unlimited Titans this past Sunday they will be aiming for another strong performance against the Knights.

“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked to, but it was great to come away with a win against the Titans,” said Warriors coach Malibongwe Maketa. “The bodies are a bit sore after the game so the guys had a day off today ; they will be back at work tomorrow, and looking forward to the big challenge coming up.”

It is now officially the business end of the Momentum One-Day Cup, with the Warriors having only three pool-stage games left, the same number as the Titans, while the other four teams each have four games remaining.

Tonight the Dolphins will play the Knights, and on Friday the Lions take on the Dolphins and the Titans face the Cobras.

The results of those encounters will give the Warriors a good indication of what they need to get out of Sunday’s match.

“We are playing very good cricket in this competition, and we are putting everything into winning as many matches as we can, and sealing that qualifying spot,” said Maketa. “It is always a good match when we play the Knights, and Sunday should be no different.”

The Warriors are second on the log with 18 points, one point behind the table-topping Cobras and three points ahead of the Lions.

With the Titans on 13 points, the Dolphins on nine and the Knights on eight, all the teams have a mathematical chance of making the playoffs, but by the end of Sunday it should be a lot clearer which teams will reach that stage.

The Cobras, Warriors and Lions are definitely the form teams, having lost only two games so far this season, and it will be a tight run-in for them if they keep up their good form.

The Cobras and Lions are still to play each other, while the Warriors and Cobras will also face-off before the end of the pool stage.

The Lions and Warriors clashed for the last time in the pool stage last week Friday, with the Lions scraping up a four-run victory after the Warriors looked as if they had the win in the bag. “We were disappointed with ourselves as we were in a good position to win the game, and threw it away against the Lions, so to bounce back against the Titans was important for us,” said Maketa.

The win over the Titans will give them momentum, and another win against the Knights will put them in a strong position to make the playoffs.

Border stars Jerry Nqolo, Christiaan Jonker and Lundi Mbane all made their mark against the Titans, and they will be eager to impress again in front of their home fans.

“The guys bring a nice local flavour to our team and they enjoy coming home and playing in front of their home crowd,” said Maketa.
