Security focus for Chilli Boys match in EL

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality’s local organising committee plan to tighten crowd flow measures for Chippa United’s Premier Soccer League fixture against Jomo Cosmos at Buffalo City Stadium tomorrow (8.15pm).

East London hosted Ajax Cape Town in the city last month, their first PSL game after 11 years of top-flight soccer drought.

Excited football lovers in the City filled the Buffalo City Stadium to witness the action on the day.

Due to the large number of people coming in the game started 10 minutes late to allow ticket-holders to enter the stadium.

The LOC and BCMM spokesperson Sithembiso Khanyile said new security measures had been put in place to control the number of people entering the stadium.

“The Chippa United game against Ajax Cape Town was the first PSL match to be held in East London in more than a decade.

“People will remember that the last time we had a PSL team was Mthatha Bush Bucks in 2005.

“We felt that we will be instituting interventions and new measurements on how we will be handling the security situation in preparation for the Chippa and Cosmos game.”

Khanyile says anybody passing security checkpoints outside the stadium will need to have a valid ticket.

“You will remember the previous game against Ajax and Chippa was a sold out crowd but people who did not have tickets also came to the stadium thinking they would be able to get tickets at the stadium.

“After the game we held a security cluster post match briefing where we paid attention to all the areas where the preparations went well.

“ One of the areas that we picked up as serious area of improvement was the security preparations.”

He said the second aspect was to ensure that there will not be any overcrowding on any of the stands.

“We have installed gates to secure the main grandstand once it reaches a seating capacity.

“There will be channels to the south stands where there is additional sitting capacity.”
