Chippa dim Stars as winning streak continues

Chippa United have consolidated their position in the top six after clinching a third consecutive win, beating Free State Stars 2-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Satisfied coach Dan “Dance” Malesela says another myth has been dispelled as winning three games in a row is a first for the Port Elizabeth-based club this season.

A late first-half goal from Xola Mlambo and a great finish by Nkosinathi Mthiyane in the 71st minute saw the Chilli Boys take the much-needed three points.

Malesela said he was happy with the team’s performance against Ea Lla Koto and now is looking at stretching their winning spree to five matches in a row.

“Somebody said when you win and you win well it becomes a habit and I want it to become a habit. I want it to become second nature and it must not only be with the players but everybody at the club must be working hard to see that this team achieves more than it is thought it can achieve,” he said.

“We need to do that and if it starts with the players, it’s good and we must continue. Maybe we must look at five because we have two close to each other next week.”

The former Orlando Pirates defender said he never dismissed the thought of Stars coming back into the game.

“You don’t close that door because any team can come back anytime. It takes only one mistake,” said Malesela.

“I don’t like to term loss of concentration because then I am talking in general. If we don’t go to challenge the ball, if we don’t pick up people, if we don’t mark right, the right way we might concede a goal.

“I was very conscious about the fact that even when we are in possession we should be looking okay at the back, we must be in shape. It’s getting better – two clean sheets, that’s good.”

When asked to comment on the below par performance of Chippa’s international striker Aristede Bance, Malesela defended the striker saying it happens to every player.

“I’ll tell you something good about Bance. I know his limitations and there are a lot of them. His presence is what helps.”
