ABC Motsepe League rookies Lion City FC have managed to dethrone Tornado from the league’s summit.

The Port Elizabeth outfit are at the top after clobbering FC Buffalo 3-1 at the weekend while Mdantsane-based Tornado played out to a 2-2 stalemate with Zimbane Killers.

In fact, Tornado, have dropped to third place as FC Elliot now occupy second place after beating Highbury 3-2.

After the Buffalo drubbing, City coach Gcobani Chithwa – the youngest mentor in the league – said the belief was high in the club’s camp that they can go all the way to clinching the title in their maiden season in SA’s domestic football third tier.

The newcomers completely dominated Buffalo, especially in the second half where they wrapped up a match that was tied at 1-1 going into the interval.

Buffalo’s shambolic defence was at sixes and sevens the entire time and City could have easily put five goals behind their goalkeeper.

Now City stand in pole position to take the title with eight of their remaining 10 matches to be played in Port Elizabeth.

However, the club most likely to halt City is Elliot next weekend.

Elliot, themselves title contenders, have proved to be a force to be reckoned with under the stewardship of the experienced and highly rated Julius Dube, who successfully guided Mthatha Bucks to promotion to the National First Division.

Chithwa had mixed feelings about their remaining matches, especially the eight due for Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

“We came to East London for maximum points and that we achieved because we executed our plan perfectly especially on catching our opponents with counter attacks,” he said. “Now we look forward to the remaining matches with eight in the Bay Metro.

“I know people will say that gives us an upper hand in the title race and yes I agree but also it may be the opposite because derbies have the pride element to them and you just never know what will happen.”

City are leading the pack with 45 points from 20 matches with just three losses. Behind them are Elliot who are one point behind with just two defeats –- the lowest in the league thus far. Tornado at position three are on 43 points and will have to dig deep if they are to reclaim the top spot from the consistent City.

With 10 matches to the end of the season, the title race remains a tight contest with no clear leaders. This has been the case for at least the three past seasons in the Eastern Cape provincial league. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
