Proteas left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso’s bowling action has been found to be illegal, putting in doubt his chances of playing in the World Twenty20 tournament in India later this month.

Phangiso underwent independent tests after being reported for a suspected illegal action last month.

The tests were conducted by a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Panel of Human Movement specialists last Friday at the University of Pretoria’s High Performance Centre.

The centre was accredited as an ICC testing laboratory in December 2014.

“The assessment revealed that all variations of his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations‚” Cricket SA (CSA) said in a statement yesterday.

Phangiso has been withdrawn from the first two of South Africa’s three Twenty20 internationals against visiting Australia, starting in Durban on Friday.

But he will stay with the squad and work on his action together with Claude Henderson, the team’s spin bowling coach, and Vincent Barnes, the CSA high performance manager.

He will undergo a second round of independent tests next Monday‚ which will then determine whether he is available for selection for the last T20 against Australia at Newlands in Cape Town next Wednesday and whether he travels with the Proteas T20 squad to India for the ICC World Twenty20.

“The timing of this issue for Aaron and for our World T20 squad is clearly inopportune but we need to deal with it.

“We will work hard to remedy Aaron’s action and have him retested as soon as practically possible‚” said CSA chief executive‚ Haroon Lorgat.

“We are fortunate to have an ICC accredited laboratory in South Africa and this will certainly make a quick turnaround possible.”

Phangiso’s fate prompted Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula to issue a statement urging CSA to “save the talent and future of this black diamond”.

“All this should not serve as ammunition to those who continue to slow our transformation objectives,” Mbalula said.

Phangiso was reported after the domestic one-day semifinal but pending the results of the tests was able to help his team, the Lions, beat the Cape Cobras in the final in Cape Town last Sunday, taking three wickets for 33 runs.
