It was another day that belonged to the visitors as the Sunfoil Dolphins continued their assault with the bat on day two of the Sunfoil Series clash with the Warriors at Buffalo Park yesterday.

After a full day of action on day one in which 96 overs were bowled, day two proved to be frustrating for the players as just 38.2 overs were possible as first rain caused a delay and then bad light caused some confusion and it looked as if the day’s play had ended early at 4:20pm when umpires pulled the players off.

However, during the delay the Dolphins declared on 450/8 and just after 5pm both the fielding side and the Warriors openers came onto the field, only for the umpires to then send them off again without a ball being bowled to end play.

With such a big score on the board the chances of the Warriors winning this match are slim.

It should be an interesting final two days to see what approach the Warriors take, while the Dolphins should feel that they are in a good position.

The Dolphins resumed play yesterday morning on 289/4, with Daryn Smit (12no) and captain Morne van Wyk (45no) at the crease, having shared an unbeaten 56-run stand the afternoon before.

The two continued where they left off and Van Wyk reached his half century and the Dolphins passed the 300 run mark in the 99th over.

With 25 minutes to go to lunch the rain came down and forced the players off with the Dolphins on 339/4, with an early lunch then being called at 12pm.

Persistent light rain continued through the lunch break and forced play to be delayed further into the afternoon.

Finally play got under way again just after 2pm and the Warriors claimed the breakthrough almost immediately when just five balls into the session Smit (25) was run out going for a quick single and good fielding from Aya Gqamane saw him return the ball to keeper Gihahn Cloete to break the stumps, ending a good 107-run partnership.

Andile Phehlukwayo (5) did not last long as he became Simon Harmer’s third wicket of the innings, caught by Basheer Walters, and the Dolphins slipped to 355/6.

Keshav Maharaj joined Van Wyk at the crease and an entertaining stand ensued as Maharaj looked to attack from the outset, while Van Wyk brought up a well deserved century in the 122nd over.

Maharaj, meanwhile, cracked bowlers Harmer, Jerry Nqolo and Gqamane for a six each, while also crashing four boundaries as he came out the blocks blazing.

Van Wyk’s impressive innings was finally ended as Gqamane had him caught behind by Cloete for 122 off 147 balls (14x4, 1x6), ending the 84-run stand with Maharaj.

In Gqamane’s next over Maharaj reached his half century and new batsman Mthokozisi Shezi (4) was caught by Colin Ackermann.

The next over saw just two balls played when the umpires called light, with Maharaj unbeaten on 51.

Today’s play will get under way at 9:30am with the Warriors set to start their first innings.
