Clarendon smash another record in rowing

A smashing performance from the Clarendon U15 rowing Octople saw the team smash the previous record at the South African Schools Rowing Championships at the Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria over the past weekend.

The team was in amazing form to break the previous record, which was only set this past January, by an incredible 24 seconds on the way to sealing a memorable gold.

The team consisting of Jadin Meyer (bow), Lunako Mjoba, Pyler Jung, Alyssa Theron, Lauren Ferrant, Tynneqa Jeffries, Sarah King, Amy Strydom (stroke) and cox Erin Karshagen were in a league of their own as they left Holy Rosary and St Andrew’s Girls School, who claimed second and third respectively, in the dust.

“In the Eastern Cape there aren’t many girls Octople teams, so we always raced with the boys and from these performances I knew we were going to do well, but I didn’t expect that well,” said Clarendon junior girls’ rowing coach Kate Godfrey.

“They rowed a beautiful race and it will be extremely tough for another team to beat that record.

“I am very happy for all the girls who competed because they have been training so hard and deserved their success.”

They were not the only Clarendon team to claim a medal on the day as the Clarendon U15 Quad won a bronze medal, while Sarah King in the U15 sculling event claimed silver and the Clarendon U16 fours also won a silver medal.

“Generally it was a a good regatta,” said Bill Godfrey, head of Clarendon Rowing.

“Some of the results were very good while others were a bit disappointing, but in all we are happy with how the girls performed.”
