Impressive karting action was on full show this past Saturday as the second round of the Border karting champs was battled out at the East London race track.

It was an interesting day in which some drivers bounced back after the first round while others managed to stretch their leads and set themselves up well for the rest of the season.

“We had a very good day of racing,” said Border karting club chairman Joe Borgas,

“We have some great talent coming through the Cadet class ranks and we had a fantastic days racing with the DD2 class a very exciting one to watch.”

In the 50cc Cadet class, Jordan van der Merwe was in top form to win all three heats on the day in dominant fashion.

He was however aided by reigning champion, Kaylim Padayachee, suffering a mechanical problem in the first heat which then saw him start the second heat from the back of the grid.

It was thus damage limitation for him and he did well to fight his way back and take second overall for the day, tied on points with Dylan Stevens who had a solid and consistent day.

In the championship standings, Padayachee still holds on to a narrow three point lead over van der Merwe, with Stevens in third.

The 60cc Junior class ended up being a bit of a non-race as Sebastian Smith found himself as the only kart on track after the only other competitor to enter for the day, Jordan Dorning pulled out because he was sick.

This now means that Smith has a comfortable 27 point lead over his nearest rival, Kenzo Barnard of Port Elizabeth at this early stage in the season.

The three Clubman’s Class races were as always well fought out and in Clubman’s A it was once again Jared de Kock who took the overall honours.

Clubman’s B was a closer affair as Neil Stephen edged Tristan Wantenaar for the overall victory with Jeff Hall coming home in a third.

In Clubman’s C, reigning champion Cuan Flusk was back after missing the first round and he scored an overall victory on the day, ahead of Melandre Marais in second, and David Burberry in third.

In the championship standings, however, it is Cherne Marais who leads the way after consistent performances over the first two rounds while Melandre sits second and Flusk has now moved up into third position.

The biggest class of the day then proved to be the most exciting as the drivers in the DD2 Class kept the spectators on their feet as drivers changed positions corner after corner.

In the end defending champion Geoff Stephen took the overall win ahead of current championship leader Shaun Gradwell who had to settle for second while Craig Borges claimed third place.

The NSF100 Bike class saw Connor Breakspear cut the lead of current championship Ashton Heidemann with the overall win, with Heidemann finishing second ahead of Jordan Breakspear in third.

Heidemann now holds a narrow one point gap over Connor, while Jordan sits close behind the front two.

The next round of the championship will be held on May 21 and for more information please contact Joe Borges at Joe@bigjoeracing.com
