Chilli Boys coach denies Pirates link

As his playing nickname “Dance” suggests, Dan Malesela prefers to dance to his own tune and, at Chippa United, his new head coach position gives him the centre stage.

The 50-year-old has penned a three-year contract with the Chilli Boys, and he told the Dispatch yesterday that the role of being the main man suits him just fine.

Malesela also took the time to contradict reports linking him with a return to Pirates in an assistant role.

“There is no truth to the Pirates rumour because I have never spoken to anybody at Pirates,” he insisted.

Interestingly, Malesela took up the offer to become an assistant to Roger Sikhakhane at Chippa United, before the latter left the club.

Malesela is adamant that he accepted the offer, because he was on the same page as Sikhakhane regarding coaching philosophy. Any differences could have led to him rejecting the offer to join the club, he said.

“I have never been one who likes being an assistant to anybody. If I work with someone as an assistant coach, I might be critical of a lot of things. Say, for instance, I go to Pirates and become an assistant coach, there are a lot of things that I see Pirates doing when they play matches that I would totally want to remove,” Malesela said.

“I prefer my own structure; hence I signed a three-year contract here . It is a great thing to have signed here considering this is my first season in the PSL…I anticipated that I would be in the PSL earlier and I appreciate the fact that the chairman identified the potential in me,” stated the coach.

The Mabopane-born mentor believes Chippa United have the potential to do better than their current sixth position on the Absa Premiership log.

However, that’s easier said than done: “There is still a lot of work to be done, I think and what is priority now is we try to keep the team in the top eight.

“You can’t come in the middle of the season and change a lot, so it is difficult to fully implement my philosophy at the club. Everything should be done properly for next season.”
