Derbies separate men from boys

It was a busy weekend for school teams as the derby season officially got under way after the schools holidays.

Some statements were made and teams claimed bragging rights after some entertaining battles.

On the rugby side some interesting results gave idea of how the season may pan out for the teams, while hockey and netball teams also got their local seasons under way and made their own statements of intent.

The Selborne College first rugby team put in a top performance as they outclassed Grens High 38-5 at Selborne on Saturday.

It was a big result for Selborne who had beaten Grens in a closer match at the Border schools rugby day, but showed their class to win comfortably this time round.

On the girls side the Grens first netball team claimed a strong 34-16 win over Clarendon in their derby match up and they will be aiming to take that momentum into the rest of the season.

At Stirling, Dale College first rugby put in a strong performance away from home against the hosts, scoring a 60-12 triumph on Saturday.

The current Dale side is looking very good and they should be vying to be the top Border team come end of season, while Stirling did show some good fight and they will look to take that into their coming fixtures.

Dale’s first boys hockey team also managed to win their match against Stirling, claiming a close 2-1 result in the end.

Stirling’s first girls hockey however claimed a solid 4-2 win against KHS, but KHS first girls netball then managed to win their match 25-19.

At Hudson Park the hosts first rugby side scored a good 17-8 win over old rivals Cambridge in an entertaining derby on Saturday.

Hudson will be happy to claim early bragging rights and it will have set up a great showdown in the return fixture at Cambridge later in the year.

All Hudson first teams enjoyed success on a good home derby weekend for them as the first boys hockey side claimed a powerful 6-1 win, the first girls hockey team shut Cambridge out for a 2-0 win and the Hudson first netball team won a good match 29-20.

Queen’s College claimed a 25-15 win against a visiting Marlow team in their derby day clash.

Queen’s will be happy to have got the win and they will aim to take that momentum into their big derby weekend against Selborne coming up.

Another host of entertaining derbies will be all set for the coming weekend and school teams will be eager to do well and build up some momentum.
