Top riders set for action in Crit series

Cycling action kicks into high gear tomorrow as the second race of the Crit cycling series presented by Tribal gets under way in Beacon Bay.

A few top competitors from the city will take part and the interesting format should be a lot of fun for the cyclists who compete.

The criterium is a time based race where cyclists do loops on a course over a certain amount of time.

Tomorrow’s course is right across the road from the Daily Dispatch offices and is on a 2.5km track, which the competitors will be cycling around until their time is up.

A few well-known local cyclists are expected to take part which should make for some very exciting riding.

“Jonas Schomburg is a big name, while we also hope Cindy Schwulst will be taking part,” said Cillian Ryan from Tribal.

Schomburg is an international triathlete who spends a lot of the year in East London training, while Schwulst is East London’s top female triathlete.

In the first crit race last month team Solarwise dominated their division and if they return to compete again they should be part of the front-runners.

“We are hoping that team Solarwise will be back to retain their overall lead as they were dominant in the first race,” said Ryan.

Awie Jacobs, Donovan O’Reilly and Ken Prentis will be the names to look out for as they took the top three places in their category respectively.

It is, however, a race for anybody who is interested, not just the top cyclists and all are welcome to enter and try it out at their own pace.

“We are expecting a very good race,” said Ryan.

“For the more experienced cyclists it should be a very competitive race while it will also be a very good introductory race for those wanting to try their first crit.”

To enter the race will cost cyclists R100 for open competitors and R70 for juniors.

CSA temporary licenses are required for all that don’t have a Cycling SA licence and will be available at R35.

Entries for the race can be found at East London Cycles, Cycle HQ and Cycle Express until 1pm this afternoon and until 5pm at Tribal today.

Late entries will be accepted at the course tomorrow. However, a late entry fee of an extra R20 will apply.

Twizza will be at the race with drinks and give-aways, and Volvo East London will also be giving out some spot prizes.
